Summary(授業の概要)

Students will be taught how to write short essays on a variety of different topics including personal opinions about current issues. They will also learn how to write basic emails and how to avoid copying other people’s work. The teacher will introduce strategies to help students write more fluently. These include ways to get ideas, planning, writing different drafts and editing. The teacher will also provide appropriate correction of errors.

Objectives(学習目標)

By taking this course students will:

  1. learn the structure of a basic paragraph and essay
  2. learn how to write basic emails
  3. learn how to avoid plagiarism or copying other people’s work
  4. increase their writing fluency
  5. increase their confidence and motivation to write in English

Weekly plan(授業計画)

Below is a tentative weekly plan which the teacher may change.

The teacher will inform students about any changes in the first lesson of each quarter.

Quarter 2

Week 1: Course introduction

Week 2-7: Lessons will based on writing about and discussing the following topics: self-introduction, a personal problem, a movie review. Students will practice writing with a computer and learn how to write a clear email.

Week 8: Review

Quarter 3

Weeks 1-7: Lessons will be based on writing about and discussing the following topics: a wikipedia page, student special skills, a social problem. Students will practice writing with a computer and learn how to write a clear email.

Week 8: Review

Preparation and review (授業時間外の学習(予習)・復習)方法)

The teacher will give instructions on how students can prepare for and review lessons.

Lesson style and equipment  (授業形態・使用機器)

This section is to provide help for students with disabilities (special needs).

Students in this class may have to do following: read a textbook or a handout, talk to a partner or in a small group, watch videos, listen to a CD, use a computer, read from or write on a whiteboard.

If there are any major differences from this list the teacher will inform the students in the first lesson.

Textbooks/Materials(教科書)

If textbooks were used in Quarter 2 they will be the same in Quarter 3

Grading (成績評価)

Each teacher will choose their own way to grade students. Here is an example:

Emails (10%),Writing assignment 1 (10%),  Writing assignment 2 (15%), Writing assignment 3 (20%), Writing assignment 4 (25%), Participation (20%)*

* Students may get full participation points by attending all classes, coming on time, completing in class assignments, and speaking up in class. Students may lose points by being absent, coming late, off-task behavior (e.g. sleeping, or texting on your phone), or non-participation in discussions.

The teacher will inform students about grading in the first lesson.

Other important information (備考/履修上の注意)

平成27年度および28年度入学生が本科目を年度後半に履修する場合は、年度後半に大学が実施するTOEIC-IPを受験すること。やむを得ない事情で当該TOEIC-IPを受験できない場合は、年度後半にカレッジTOEICまたは公開TOEICを受験し、スコアを教養教育グループおよび担当教員に提示すること。
