EC2 (Reading) Syllabus

Key words:(主題キーワード) reading, comprehension, fluency

Summary:(授業の概要)

This course includes both an intensive and extensive reading component. For intensive reading, the class will read somewhat challenging materials of interest to the students (e.g., a web or textbook article on a current social issue). After previewing the text, each student will read strategically to comprehend the main points or the key points needed to achieve a task. Students will then check their comprehension (e.g., a written summary in English or Japanese) and discuss the content critically in English. Other class activities may include a language focus on the text, collaborative unit projects (e.g., researching and presenting on a topic in groups), and timed reading quizzes.

In addition, extensive reading will be done. Teachers will help each student find appropriate materials of interest (e.g., graded readers, web articles), and students will read for pleasure. Extensive reading will mostly be done out of class, but some class time may be devoted to finding texts, reading, and/or sharing what one has read.
