Summary: (授業の概要)

Through reading academic texts students will develop academic reading skills. The class will review reading strategies learned in year one (reading fluently for main points), but the course will focus more on reading accuracy and reading for research purposes. Reading strategies practiced include previewing texts, focusing on key information, strategic dictionary use, and critical thinking skills. Independent reading assignments in which students choose materials relevant to their needs to read, summarize and discuss will be encouraged.

Objectives: (学習目標)

By taking this course students should:

  1.   further develop their reading skills as a base for academic study
  2.   further develop their ability to read strategically and understand key     points
  3.   further develop their ability to research needed information
  4.   reinforce their understanding of academic vocabulary and structures     necessary for college English

Weekly plan(授業計画)

Below is a tentative weekly plan which the teacher may change.

The teacher will inform students about any changes in the first lesson

Quarter 1 or Quarter 3

Week 1: Introduction (Course outline and self-introduction)

Week 2-7: Lessons will based on reading about and discussing the following personal topics and social issues: myths, music, Japanese education, student life (clubs, hobbies), endangered species, global warming, Japanese politics. Students will develop their knowledge of vocabulary connected with these topics as well as academic vocabulary in general.

Week 8: Review

Quarter 2 or Quarter 4

Weeks 1-7: Lessons will based on reading about and discussing the following personal topics and social issues: movies, declining birth rate, Japanese economic issues, food, poverty. Students will develop their knowledge of vocabulary connected with these topics as well as academic vocabulary in general.

Week 8: Review

Preparation and review (授業時間外の学習(予習)・復習)方法)

The teacher will give instructions on how students can prepare for and review lessons.

Lesson style and equipment  (授業形態・使用機器)

This section is to provide help for students with disabilities (special needs).

Students in this class may have to do following: read a textbook or a handout, talk to a partner or in a small group, watch videos, listen to a CD, use a computer, read from or write on a whiteboard.

If there are any major differences from this list the teacher will inform the students in the first lesson.

If textbooks were used in Quarter 1 they will be the same in Quarter 2

If textbooks were used in Quarter 3 they will be the same in Quarter 4

Grading (成績評価)

Each teacher will choose their own way to grade students. Here is an example:

Reading Research Project (20%), Reading Tests (20%), Speed Reading Quizzes (20%), Independent Reading (20%), Participation (20%)*

* You get full participation points by attending all classes, coming on time, completing in class assignments, and speaking up in class. You may lose points by being absent, coming late, off-task behavior (e.g. sleeping, or texting on your phone), or non-participation in discussions.

The teacher will inform students about grading in the first lesson.

Other important information (備考/履修上の注意)

平成27年度および28年度入学生が本科目を年度後半に履修する場合は、年度後半に大学が実施するTOEIC-IPを受験すること。やむを得ない事情で当該TOEIC-IPを受験できない場合は、年度後半にカレッジTOEICまたは公開TOEICを受験し、スコアを教養教育グループおよび担当教員に提示すること。
