5. L-café, computer rooms, language labs

The L-café is located on the first floor of the General Education Building ‘A’ Annex (一 般教育A棟1階別館). The L-café is managed by Masumi Fujimoto (extension 7313) who teaches various lessons and organizes more informal opportunities for international and Japanese students to interact. Because many international students use the L-café, a number of other languages can be heard there. Students can use the L-café at any time between 10:00am and 7:00pm, Monday through Friday.  As well as the L-café manager, there are student workers and volunteer teachers available for help and advice. Students can go to find a conversation partner, to work on their own, or to use the resources and facilities the L-café offers (including laptop computers). There are also a number of events and field trips throughout the year that are organized through the L-café. These are open to any students or teachers who wish to participate in them.

Computer rooms

The LEC computer room (語学演習室兼自習室 – gogaku enshu shitsu ken jishushitsu) on the first floor of the ‘A’ building (Room A12) has one part-time staff member and 35 computers. There is no need to log in with an ID or password on these computers. As well as Internet access, each computer has various kinds of language learning software installed for self-access.

Students can use the computer room between 8:00am and 8:00pm. They gain access using their student ID cards. Full-time staff will also need to use their ID cards, and part-time staff can use an access card kept in the general office on the second floor.

DVDs and graded readers can be borrowed from the computer room. The DVDs must be viewed in the room itself but books can be taken home. A barcode check out system has been put into place for students to borrow books. They must check out any books with the office worker in A12 (her work schedule is posted on the door). If the office worker is not available staff from the second floor general office can also issue books. Students can borrow a maximum of two books at a time for one week in term time and can borrow up to four books at one time in the winter, spring, and summer breaks.

Teachers can borrow any of the DVDs or books for their classes for one day at a time. Teachers can use the computer room for their own use or for classroom use – if you need to reserve the room, please contact the office worker or check with the kyouyou kyoiku group for availability.

The Educational Computer Room (情報処理演習室兼自習室 – jouho shori enshuushitsu ken jishuushitsu) is another computer room next door (Room A11) to the LEC computer room, and it can be reserved for class use. Please note that students and faculty need their ID and password to log in to these computers. There are no headphones available in this room and you cannot watch DVDs.

To see if this room or other computer rooms are available, please consult the office on the second floor. For A11 and computer rooms in other buildings, you will then need to reserve the room with the Joho Centre. The office staff can send you the form, or you can access it at the following link while on campus: http://www.citm.okayama-u.ac.jp/citm/manual/application5.html

Language laboratory

A language laboratory for class use is on the fourth floor of the ‘A’ building (Room A44). If you would like to use the room for lessons you need to reserve for the following year. Notice of the booking system is posted each autumn. Staff can also access other rooms with computers in the Joho Centre and the main library; please contact the office staff in the ‘A’ building if you wish to reserve them.
